Oregano

Spieces: Origanum vulgare hirtum- Greek Oregano

 

The name of oregano originates from the two Greek words «όρος» meaning mountain and «γάνος» meaning brightness, characterizing it as the

plant which brightens the mountain.

Aristotle wrote that if a wounded by a hunter goat ate oregano, its wound was getting healed!

 

Therapeutic properties:

  • Internal use as tea (oregano infusion in hot water):

  • Oregano is one of the richest plants in vitamin C.  

– It’s rich in minerals, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, manganese and vitamin Α.

– It has antibiotic and antiseptic properties.

– It helps with stomach problems, and especially with gastric atony.

– It soothes the intestinal disorders and abdomen pain.

– Oregano can be used for mouthwash and gargles, to reduce oulitis and tooth pain and throat inflammation.

– It helps to reduce problems related with pain during menstruation and menopause.

– It acts against diarrhea.

  • External use:

– Inhalations using boiling water with oregano in it can help against bronchial disease.

–It can be used as antiseptic for injuries.

 

Antibacterial properties:

According to a research hold in Georgetown University, the essential oils of oregano and its substances thymol and carvacrol contribute to suspend the development of many bacteria and fungus, including the ones causing food borne disease.  That study proved that oregano kills microorganisms in a similar way, as penicillin and streptomycin.
